The rugged cliff shoreline of Bell Island looms in the distance. You find your comfortable perch in the on our vessel as your guide easily navigates out of Sunset Key Marina before throttling up the engines and setting a course straight across Conception Bay. He's already told you and the small group of other excited adventurers to keep an eye out for marine life on the way. Everyone has their eyes peeled for a whale to breach or maybe you will be one of the lucky few who get to see a school of tuna chasing after baitfish near the surface.
The guide slows the boat as you pass Kelly's island and tells a few stories of pirates and early settlers to the area. He's got a mischievous glint in his eye that makes you think he may be embellishing the story just a little! Closer to Bell island he stops and tells you a story of Iron Ore mining, German Submarines, and WWII shipwrecks that lie directly beneath the ocean depths. The mischievousness is gone from his eye and you can hear the passion in his voice about the subject. The beauty of this rugged coastline is still very evident but you now feel there much more to it; the cultural, the history, the people...
The boat brings you back to Chimney Cove and you observe the preparation of our beautiful and delectable dishes and the most amazing spread of food laid out that we call a "boil up". Your senses are overwhelmed with the smell of fish and home-made treats, the colorful spread of wild edibles and the gracious nature of your host.
Belly full, you would rather lay down for a nap, but you all head back on the flying bridge as we sail back to the Sunset Key Marina.
Your culinary adventure begins with tea biscuits and a hot beverage upon your arrival, followed by a seared scallop small plate. Your entrée consists of a Newfoundland classic, pan friend cod fish, along with various traditional side dishes such as root vegetables, baked beans, and home made bread. The little room you have left will be filled by a decadent, traditional blueberry desert and you choice of tea or coffee.
