The team at X-Ray magazine recently teamed up with Ocean Quest Adventures to explore the abandoned mines of Bell Island. As they dove the network of caverns and tunnels that make up the mine they were exposed to some of the lost history that was a way of life for so many people nearly 60 years ago. Over the course of the exploration the team uncovered numerous pumps, pipes, pictures on the walls, and branches of tunnels that haven’t been seen in over half a century. Check out the article written by Sabine Kerkau that recounts her experiences avoiding snow storms, dealing with flooding, and finding the lost artifacts with the OQ team. As a final note, we’d like to send a special thanks to some of the people that volunteered their time to make this happen, as well as the Diver Alert Network for monitoring the health of all the divers involved.
